Malebolgia, the ruler of the Underworld, vows revenge on Spawn for his treasonous attack. In a flash of malevolent inspiration, Malebolgia takes the unbalanced spirit of Billy Kincaid, a notorious enemy from Spawn's past, and infuses it into the body of one of his loyal but nameless minions - a fierce hunter and warrior. The new deadly creature, now known as Kin, goes to Earth seeking the only person Spawn ever loved - his mortal wife, Wanda. Using her as bait, Malebolgia will lure Spawn into his trap.

Malebolgia, ruler of the Underworld, is attacked and mortally wounded by his creation, Spawn. Malebolgia calls out to his evil minions, the Phlebiac Brothers, who obediently rush to their master's aid. In a desperate attempt to preserve his existence, Malebolgia savagely devours his servants' powers and strength. The six eyes of Vaporizer, the tough hide and claws of Vandalizer, the horn of Vindicator and other powers now course through Malebolgia's reconstructed body. In a bold move to forever free himself from his curse, Spawn attacked his master, Malebolgia. But after a terific struggle, Spawn fails to slay the ruler of the Underworld. Later he reflects on his battle experiences as Spawn. He realizes that for too long he has resisted exploring the depths of his dark powers. The time has come for him to delve deeper into his dark nature. In order to slay the beast Malebolgia, Spawn must now become a beast himself - even if it means he will never be reunited with his beloved Wanda.

With a void in the hierarchy of Heaven, the position of top Hellspawn hunter must now be filled by the will of the Seraphim. The title of Hunter Prime will go to the one who can slay the most troublesome of all Hellspawn -- the one formerly known as Al Simmons.
